As Principal/Design Director of WHL Architecture, Rex Cabaniss oversees a broad range of planning and design projects throughout the southeast.

Rex’s career spans over 27 years of professional practice across the United States and England. This experience in a variety of urban centers formed his interests in the design issues of building rich urban environments with a human scale.

As Director of Design, Rex focuses on developing a collective vision and identity for each WHL project. Establishing both the intent and charcacter through an open studio process the owner, architects, and consultants are able to easily reach a consensus and move together toward design excellence.

His expertise is the design of complex projects, integrating the project goals within a clear and comprehensive building design. Rex has the ability to quickly define and depict the project’s vision. His early sketches capture the spirit of a project and guide the design through to construction. Although his project experience ranges in scope from the boutique retail development to the planning of several city blocks, he consistently designs resolved, sensitive, and timeless projects.

Current projects range from Traditional Neighborhood Developments to high-rise mixed-use urban complexes utilizing Smart Growth concepts and New Urbanist design guidelines.

Rex’s primary focus is on collaborative opportunities to guide WHL’s planning and design efforts to enhance the design in conjunction with the needs of each community.
